Driver Education BTW Practicum
Earn your Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel authorization in our accelerated Driver Education Program. Any qualified individual 25 years or older may earn the Driver and Safety Education Behind-the-Wheel Authorization by successfully completing this two-part course. The course consists of two online classes. This class is part two. This course is the Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel Practicum. This course will prepare you to become a behind the wheel instructor through observation of students and the opportunity to teach real students with an approved mentor instructor. You will learn how to develop driving routes and how to implement driving skills through the students learning process. 9 hours of observations Behind-the-Wheel and 6 hours of Student Teaching Behind-the-Wheel. This course does NOT qualify instructor candidate to be an endorsed driver's education classroom instructor. This class must be taken concurrently with DED 3360, BTW Theory. Please note that additional travel costs will be required for the Practicum course outside of the Indian Hills enrollment. The course instructor will travel to the instructor candidate's location to administer the Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Practicum Student Teaching portion of the course. All Observations with another driving school must be approved by the Course instructor prior to beginning those assignments. If a driving school cannot be approved or a driving school is not available to provide observations to the student instructor, the Course instructor will schedule student observations for you. These additional costs must be paid to the Course Instructor. These expenses are not part of the course curriculum as they require use of a driver education vehicle. These costs will cover liability insurance, mileage, food and any overnight accommodations if the distance is greater than 2 hours travel time. Travel expenses are paid directly to the instructor. Driver Education BTW Theory
Earn your Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel authorization in our accelerated Driver Education Program. Any qualified individual 25 years or older may earn the Driver and Safety Education Behind-the-Wheel Authorization by successfully completing this two-part course. The course consists of two online classes. This class is part one. This course is the Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel Theory. This course will prepare you to become a behind the wheel instructor through materials provided to you about the skills necessary to instruct new drivers on the various driving maneuvers to become a safe and responsible driver. You will learn how to help the novice teen driver develop vehicle operational skills and good driving habits. You will be provided instructional techniques to train new drivers in the vehicle, manage the classroom in the car, preparing the new driver for various driving situations, critical thinking and decision-making exercises. Emphasis is placed on laboratory organization and administration, maintaining a calm, safe learning environment, and understanding that all new drivers learn differently. This course does NOT qualify the instructor candidate to be an endorsed driver's education classroom instructor. This class must be taken concurrently with DED 3370, BTW Practicum. Driver Education Classroom Educator Endorsement
This Classroom course will help prepare you to become a driver education classroom instructor and be able to teach from a driver education curriculum. The purpose of the Fundamental Concepts of Teaching and Learning Course is to train individuals to become professional teachers in driver education. The course is designed to provide instructor candidates with a fundamental understanding of the teaching and learning process, and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to teach driver education. To be eligible for this Classroom Endorsement course and earn the Iowa 5-12 Driver and Safety Education Endorsement, you must be a licensed educator or administrator in good standing with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE). In addition, you must have successfully completed both the Behind-the-Wheel Theory and Behind-the-Wheel Practicum courses for college credit. Please note that if you completed the Behind-the-Wheel Theory and Practicum courses through another institution, you will be required to retake both courses through Indian Hills Community College in order to earn the Iowa 5-12 Driver and Safety Education Endorsement. If you have not yet completed the Behind-the-Wheel Theory and Practicum courses, they must be completed before beginning the Classroom Endorsement course. However, you may enroll in all three courses at the same time. Once enrolled, the course instructor will provide guidance on the recommended sequence and next steps. Classroom Course Length: 6 to 10 weeks. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Behind-the-Wheel Theory and Behind-the-Wheel Practicum courses for college credit.
