The story of North Carolina has been recorded and interpreted by a variety of historians over the past four centuries. They have written about the native inhabitants of the region, the explorers and settlers who came to these shores, the social and political operatives who organized the colony and later state, and the many colorful characters who have participated in the evolution of our "Vale of Humility between two Mountains of Conceit." This class will consider a group of recorders and interpreters who are largely ignored: the mapmakers--cartographers, geographers, topographers, artists, draftsmen, publishers--whose work provides a fascinating view of North Carolina's history. Participants will view and discuss a variety of historic maps that tell North Carolina's story with a focus on the eastern region of the state and its unique geography, place names, and history.
