Course Description: Understanding, Overcoming and Preventing Burnout

Burnout is not simply a matter of working too hard, it is what happens when the demands of a role chronically outpace the resources a person has to meet them. This then leads to cynicism and self-doubt. This workshop gives participants a clear, research-grounded model for recognizing burnout in themselves and their teams. We share practices for overcoming and avoiding burnout. We discuss and define how to build organizational conditions that prevent burnout from taking hold in the first place. In this interactive workshop, participants will work through the six organizational factors most strongly linked to burnout (workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values alignment). We then assess how to create an environment that minimizes these causes. Rather than treating burnout simply as a personal failing to be managed with resilience tips, this session reframes it as a culture-design problem, giving leaders concrete levers they can actually pull.
