Micro Course Information: CMSP182 - Improv and Impromptu Speaking in the Workplace

Because people often associate improvisation with acting or some type of performance experience, the mere thought of "improv" may induce some level of anxiety for the "non-performer." However, this micro course is designed to be an exploration of the tenets of improvisation and impromptus peaking for all audiences, especially those that may consider themselves "non-performers." The activities and exercises in this micro course are meant to be low-risk opportunities to explore and learn how to put improvisational and impromptu speaking techniques into practice in the workplace and in everyday life, as well as how to be more comfortable with "the uncomfortable" in general. In this micro course, you will come away with skills and strategies for thinking and speaking on the spot, networking and building rapport using the practice of improvisation, creating positive first impressions, and becoming a confident conversationalist.  

After successfully completing this micro course, you'll be able to:   

  • - Practice designing and delivering confident speeches without warning or preparation
  • - Use improvisational speaking to improve leadership and communication skills in the workplace
  • - Create positive first impressions through listening and speaking productively

Micro Course Outline: 

Unit 1 - Explore the value of impromptu speaking and improvisation in the workplace and discuss tips for managing performance anxiety.

Unit 2 - Learn about how active listening can greatly enhance your public speaking skills, and then practice your active listening skills.

Unit 3 - Learn about the fundamentals of delivering an impromptu speech, and build comfort and confidence while practicing impromptu speaking.

Unit 4 - Explore how improvisational skills can be specifically applied to networking and leadership in the professional world, and practice improvisational speaking skills in real-world scenarios.


This micro course is 100% online, features 15 hours of engaging content, and is self-paced during the course open and close dates.
