Testing methods are demonstrated and students participate in workshops in the use of instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods.

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10 and 30-hour General Industry safety and health Outreach training program to their employees and other interested groups. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts.

This course allows the student to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct both 10- and 30-hour General Industry Outreach classes, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Powered industrial trucks, commonly called forklifts, or lift trucks, are used in many industries to move materials. Forklifts are involved in many serious accidents affecting the operators and other personnel. The Forklift Safety Awareness Course is designed to give Managers, Supervisors, and Safety coordinators a detailed overview of the hazardous conditions associated with using forklifts at their facility or job site. The course does not qualify a person to operate a forklift, however, workers who operate forklifts can benefit greatly from this course. The class includes an explanation of the OSHA standards regulating the use of forklifts along with current industry best practices. At the conclusion of the course, students will have an awareness level of identifying forklift hazards and methods to control and abate the hazards.

This course provides an overview of the elements of Process Safety Management covered under the U.S. Occupational & Safety Health Act (OSHA) Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard, 29 CFR1910.119, established to reduce chemical accidents and manage the release of highly hazardous flammable and toxic chemicals. This course will demonstrate how to interpret these "performance-based" regulations and develop and implement a PSM program for a covered process required by the OSHA PSM regulation.

Managers, Supervisors, PSM Managers/Coordinators, Process Safety Engineers and anyone involved and responsible for satisfying OSHA PSM regulatory requirements are encouraged to attend.

Landscape and horticultural services encompass a wide range of services such as landscape design and architecture; soil preparation and grading; irrigation systems; tree, shrub, and lawn planting; hardscape construction including retaining walls, pathways, and patios; lawn care and landscape maintenance; arborist services including tree trimming and line clearance.

Many workers in the landscaping and horticulture services industries are exposed to several hazards including noise, pesticides and chemicals, sprains, strains, eye injuries, heat stress, amputations, drownings, slips, trips, falls, electrocutions. This course will increase worker awareness and help identify hazards, and solutions to specific activities within the landscape and horticultural services industry.

This course provides awareness-level training for heat stress to those trades that may be susceptible to heat stress and those who are charged for ensuring their safety.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain what heat stress is and why it is important.
  • Recognize factors that may contribute to heat stress.
  • describe what types of trades and professions are at risk of heat stress.
  • Recognize controls and preventative measures that eliminate or reduce the impact of heat stress.
  • Use available resources to identify the potential risk for heat stress.
  • Apply basic knowledge of heat stress risk factors to screen scenarios for heat stress.
  • Apply knowledge of heat stress controls and preventative measures to eliminate or reduce the impact of heat stress in various scenarios.
  • Recognize first aid steps to be taken in the event of a heat-related illness.
