T&L 2900: Turtle Mountain Middle School - Summer PD
Summer professional development will be centered on strengthening instructional systems through a clear focus on standards, learning targets, common formative assessments, mini reteach lessons, and the evaluation of student learning. Teachers will work collaboratively to identify priority standards, break those standards into clear learning targets, and define what students must know and be able to do. These learning targets will help ensure that instruction is focused, aligned, and written in language that both teachers and students can understand.
A major focus of the professional development will be helping teachers connect learning targets directly to classroom instruction and assessment. Teachers will examine each standard and determine the smaller skills and concepts students need in order to reach proficiency. These targets will guide daily lessons, student "I can" statements, checks for understanding, and common formative assessments. When learning targets are clearly defined, teachers can better communicate expectations and students can better understand what successful learning looks like.
Teachers will also develop common formative assessments and mini reteach lessons aligned to the learning targets. Assessment results will be used to identify which targets students have mastered and which targets need additional instruction. Mini reteach lessons will be designed to address specific gaps or misconceptions, using clear modeling, guided practice, and opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding. This process will help teachers respond to student needs in a timely and targeted way.
Finally, the professional development will emphasize evaluation of learning as an ongoing cycle. Teachers will review student work, analyze assessment data, reflect on the effectiveness of instruction, and determine next steps for intervention or enrichment. By the end of the summer professional development, teachers will have clearly defined standards, student-friendly learning targets, aligned formative assessments, and mini reteach lessons ready to support student growth.
