Foundational Frameworks for the Science of Reading and Introduction to the Word Recognition Domain Learning Objectives:
- Understand that reading is not innate, rather it is a skill that develops through instruction and practice.
- Define and compare the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough's Reading Rope and the Five Critical Components of Reading Instruction, and locate them in our literacy curricula.
- Apply the Simple View of Reading to observable reading behaviors in our classrooms.
- Name and define the characteristics and key principles of the Structured Literacy approach, and how they differ from the Balanced Literacy approach.
- Analyze the ways in which our literacy curricula follows the key principles of structured literacy.
- Identify the critical elements that help unpack decoding, or word recognition, and explain why these elements are necessary for skilled reading over time.
