Course Detail: THATCHER - Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher is widely considered the most constructively effective leader so far in the post-World War II era. During the years she was prime minister (1979-1990), the United Kingdom recovered substantially from the doldrums of the previous several decades. Economic conditions revived with lower taxes, fewer government restrictions on private enterprise, and better control of private sector spending. In addition, the British victory over Argentina in the Falklands War enhanced British prestige. Yet, despite these triumphs, she fell from power. There are some interesting parallels to the defeat of Winston Churchill in the July 1945 election after he led the U.K. to victory in World War II. Course taught by John Pafford, Ph.D.
