Course Detail: SOUTH - What is it About the South?

How and why is the South different from the rest of the country, and why should that matter? This course will trace the history and development of the southern states from their beginning through modern times with emphasis on the period between the founding of the country and the Civil War, then the long period of devastation and rebuilding and the emergence of the South as a power bloc in the 20th century. Emphasis will be placed on social, cultural, economic and military issues. Class participation and commentary will be much appreciated and the teacher, Thomas Donahue, will share anecdotes and recollections from his years in Dixie.
