Course Detail: POLITICS - Politics and Sports

In arenas from ancient Greece and Rome to the modern stadia of the 19th and 20th centuries to the media spectacles we know in contemporary times, sports have ritualized, dramatized, and challenged the prevailing political orders of all societies. One of the most iconic and controversial recent narrative created within American sport has been the NFL players'protests of police brutality and social injustice. The response to this form of protest has reflected the strictly polarized political spectrum in the US. One of the most strident strains of counter-protest has maintained that sports and politics should remain segregated. This course explores the long tradition of the sports-politics nexus to better contextualize the highly contentious contemporary moment in the U.S.
