Course Detail: POLARIZED - Polarized Politics: Jackson, Lincoln, and Trump

Only three times in the history of our nation have presidents faced political and cultural polarization as severe as the three above-mentioned presidents. Two were largely due to their personality flaws and lack of social gravitas (Jackson and Trump). Lincoln faced a nation divided by war. Yet despite the manner in which they obtained the presidency, they all shared a unique path to the Oval Office and behavior thereafter. This course will compare and contrast the personality, the mannerisms and the outcome of how three interesting presidents dealt with a most fractious and divided nation. With respect to Trump, we will use his history prior to elected office (as with Lincoln and Jackson) and his first year in office to project the future we all will share. Class led by Jim Johnson.
