Course Detail: INNOCENT - Theft of the Innocent: The Controversy of Civil Asset Forfeiture

In 2010 the Saginaw County Sheriff appeared in local papers posed alongside a 2007 Ford Mustang GT re-lettered with the Sheriff's Department name and the phrase "Taken from a Local Drug Dealer." The highly controversial act of police seizing property from suspected criminals for government use or sale for profit is known as "civil asset forfeiture." Assets taken from criminals and resold for the benefit of the community or its police force are applauded, but what happens when innocent people are caught up in police seizure? Join attorneys Philip L. Ellison of Outside Legal Counsel and Matthew Gronda in this session to learn more about civil asset forfeiture and the controversy surrounding it. They will discuss a real-life case involving this questionable police practice.
