Course Detail: WTED830 - Empowering Learners

This 30-hour course meets one day a week for 8 weeks. As a result of this training students will be able to explain the concept of inclusion and formulate a personal philosophy on inclusive education; describe the principles of effective collaboration between general education, parents, students, and special education/ELL teachers and aides; integrate Sheltered English Instruction strategies that optimize learning and involvement for English Language Learners; examine student behavior to identify effective teacher interventions that build positive teacher-student and student-student relationships to optimize learning; apply real world connection and authentic learning experiences in the classroom that encourage student ownership of learning; and describe student ownership and its application in learning, behavior, and assessment.

Schedule: Course is hybrid format (Online + Webinar). Webinar meetings are scheduled every Tuesday from October 28th to November 25th, 2025 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm . You will have until December 1st to complete your course work. Check for assignment dates in Canvas.

This course is designed for Utah state educators who are seeking a professional educator license through an Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing (APPEL). This course focuses on deepening educators' understanding of student learning and development by integrating effective strategies for supporting diverse learners and fostering positive educational environments. Participants will explore how to create and implement learning experiences that are responsive to students' individual needs and backgrounds while promoting engagement and ownership of learning.
