Course Detail: WTTG922 - Peer Support Specialist

This three-month online advanced career training program, Peer Support Specialist is designed for students who know process of recovery from addiction, mental illness, or other disorders first-hand and want to help others. The program provides students with the education and training they need to appropriately help others by using their experiences for positive outcomes. By successful conclusion, students know the central knowledge base and behaviors of effective Peer Support promoted by iNAOPS; can recite the attributes, roles, duties and guidelines for a Peer Specialist; can provide guidance on the access and use of community resources, courtroom etiquette, and communication barriers; demonstrate tools that help them develop appropriate and effective ways of approaching peers and/or veterans with a substance disorder and/or co-occurring disorder; and understand the basics necessary to assist with peer reintegration into the community.
