Course Detail: PILG - Hallowed Ground: Civil Rights Pilgrimmage and Historical Memory

Community members are invited to join Bryan Jack, PhD, professor of history, and Tandra Taylor, PhD, associate professor history and interim director of the SIUE Institute for Community Justice and Racial Equity, for an exploration of the Civil Rights Movement through an immersive, travel-based learning experience. This course blends traditional learning with on-the-road instruction, turning a bus into an extension of the classroom. Through visits to significant historical sites in St. Louis, Atlanta, and Montgomery, AL, along with music, film, literature, and scholarly discussion, participants will examine key themes that have shaped democratic life over the past century, including race, gender, social class, grassroots organizing, and nonviolent direct action. On our trip participants will engage with local experts, participate in guided discussions and reflections, and visit important landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement.
