Course Detail: ABUR - Abolitionism and the Underground Railroad in Southwestern Illinois

Mr. Dunphy will speak on abolitionists such as Elijah Lovejoy, the newspaper editor murdered in Alton in 1837 for his condemnations of slavery.  Other abolitionists covered will include Charles Hunter, who ran for governor of Illinois in 1842 as the candidate of the Liberty party, and Thaddeus Hurlbut, an Underground Railroad conductor. He will also discuss the Black abolitionist communities of Rocky Fork and Brooklyn.
