Course Detail: SWK9 - Beyond the DSM: A Deep Dive into Adult ADHD and Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

"Beyond the DSM: A Deep Dive into Adult ADHD and Neurodiversity-Affirming Care" is an in-depth exploration of ADHD through a neurodiversity-affirming lens that provides a more accurate understanding of what ADHD looks like in the therapy room. This presentation will examine how traditional diagnostic models often fail to capture the full experience of ADHD, particularly among adults, women, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Participants will delve into critical aspects of ADHD often overlooked by the DSM, including executive functioning, emotional dysregulation, and sensory processing. The session will also highlight the strengths and challenges associated with ADHD, explore common co-occurring conditions, and introduce methods for identifying an individual's unique neurotype. Attendees will leave with practical, inclusive clinical strategies and resources to better support neurodivergent clients in affirming and individualized ways.

Specific learning objectives:

1.      Define neurodiversity and explain the principles of neurodiversity-affirming care in clinical practice.

2.      Identify the limitations of the DSM criteria in accurately diagnosing ADHD across diverse adult populations.

3.      Describe key features of ADHD beyond DSM criteria, including executive functioning challenges and emotional dysregulation.

4.      Recognize common co-occurring and comorbid conditions in adults with ADHD.

5.      Assess an individual's unique neurotype, including sensory needs, social and relationship differences, and cognitive processing style.

6.     Apply practical clinical strategies and interventions that align with a neurodiversity-affirming approach.
