Course Detail: PSY9 - Scrolling into the Classroom: Social Media's Impact of Adolescent Learning and Well-Being
This presentation will explore how adolescents' social media use influences their experiences in school, with a focus on classroom behavior, academic readiness, motivation, and overall student well-being. It will examine key issues such as cyberbullying, cybervictimization, and high levels of social screen time, highlighting how these online experiences will often spill over into students' learning, relationships, and emotional functioning in school settings. Grounded in developmental and social psychological research, the presentation will translate current findings into practical, school-based strategies that educators will be able to use to reduce negative impacts and support healthier digital habits among students. We will also consider the positive potential of social media, such as connection, identity development, and peer support, to help educators foster more balanced and informed approaches to digital engagement in today's classrooms.
