Death of Despair: Rethinking Urban Gangs and Gun Violence, Presenter - Robert Aspholm, PhD, MSW, Assistant Professor, University of St. Thomas

This professional development session will involve a detailed exploration of street gangs and gun violence as they pertain to the lives of young people in dispossessed urban communities and to broader issues of social policy and social justice. The research that forms the basis for this training was carried out in Chicago and East St. Louis, the regions with the highest levels of gang involvement and gun violence in the state of Illinois, and the latter of which is situated adjacent to SIUE in the wider St. Louis metropolitan footprint.

The training topics are pertinent to social work practitioners working with young people, families, and those involved in the juvenile and criminal justice systems, particularly those practicing in urban areas. But they are also pertinent to social workers who work with other dispossessed and disaffected populations whose lives may be affected in similar ways by similar structural forces. Exploring and considering these connections will be an integral component of this training.
