Course Detail: TNOP - The Nature of Pleasure: Ethics, Science, and the Ancient Greeks

Pleasure is a familiar and normal part of everyday life, and has three important features: (1) perceptual (felt through one or more of the five senses), (2) evaluative (it feels good, not neutral or bad), and (3) motivational (we are naturally motivated to seek pleasure). Nowadays, research on the nature of pleasure is usually limited to a specific academic field, so theories of pleasure rarely capture all three aspects. However, these limits did not exist in the days of ancient Greek science and philosophy, and if we look at their work, we may find a way to understand pleasure and its role in our lives in a more holistic way.
