Course Detail: CGEN - Genealogy Through a Cultural Lens

Our cultural background suggests what we eat, how we celebrate holidays and when we go to bed and rise in the mornings. Our parents' cultures tell us what a family is. In this course, we will note questions for interviewing an elderly or helpful relative and hear about Irish land records. We will access ancestry.com library edition to follow both your family and an African-American in the U.S. Census. We will visit a local county historical society to see what a typical U.S. county might have on your American ancestor. We will take a walk among the records of immigrants to St. Louis and take books from the shelves that come from U.S. states, slave narratives, Irish cemeteries and German churches. After the first Tuesday afternoon at SIUE, you will drive yourself to three area libraries (Edwardsville Public, Madison County Archives and St. Louis County) to take tours of their books and documents.
