Course Detail: SWKD - Addressing Modern Motherhood in Supervision: What Supervisors Need to Know
This workshop equips licensed clinical supervisors with the cultural, psychological, and clinical literacy needed to support work with mothers navigating today's parenting landscape. Modern motherhood carries a distinct set of pressures - the "supermom" myth, chronic burnout and overwhelm, mom rage, mom guilt, and the often-invisible mental load of running a household and family - that can be easily misread, minimized, or missed entirely in clinical work if supervisors and supervisees lack a shared framework for naming them. This training gives supervisors the language, conceptual grounding, and supervisory tools to help their supervisees accurately identify these presentations, differentiate them from other clinical concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, relational distress), and respond with informed, validating, and effective interventions - while also strengthening supervisors' own capacity to model reflective, culturally attuned supervision around gender, caregiving, and identity.
Specific learning objectives:
1.Define and describe the core features of the modern motherhood experience
2.Identify how mental load and invisible labor manifest in clients' presenting concerns
3.Apply a supervisory framework for helping supervisees validate maternal distress without reinforcing self-blame, while still assessing for clinical risk
4.Evaluate biases and blind spots around motherhood, caregiving roles, and gender expectations, and consider how these might show up in the supervisory relationships itself
