Course Detail: HOS7 - Serving Those Who Served: End-of-Life Care for Veterans

This presentation equips hospice professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to provide end of life care that meets the unique needs of veterans. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of military culture through the "15 Things Veterans Want You to Know" and explore the experiences of veterans who served in American combat eras over the past 85 years. The session will introduce evidence-based screening tools to identify veterans' physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs and demonstrate how to integrate these assessments into the hospice admission process and individualized plan of care. Attendees will also learn best practices for addressing challenges such as PTSD, moral injury, and meaningful acknowledgment of military service, while exploring programs to honor veterans at end of life. Participants will leave with practical strategies to enhance the quality and dignity of end of life care for those who have served.

Specificlearning objectives:

 

At theconclusion of this presentation, participants:

·      Will be knowledgeable of the 15 Things VeteransWant You to Know and the experiences of veterans in American combat eras (WWII,Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Global War on Terror), to better understand militaryculture and engage more effectively with veterans on hospice care.

·      Will be knowledgeable of screening tools used toassess veterans' needs at end of life and able to incorporate them into theirhospice admission process and plan of care.

·      Will be able to implement best practices forcaring for the unique needs of veterans at end of life, including PTSD, moralinjury, and acknowledgement of service.

·      Will be knowledgeable of initiatives designed tohonor and care for veterans at end of life, including the national We HonorVeterans program, veteran-to-veteran hospice volunteers, veteran legacyprojects, veteran pinning ceremonies (including Welcome Home for VietnamVeterans), Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, Vet-to-Vet Cafes, andVeteran Honor Escort
