Course Detail: DFF1 - DNA, Fingerprints and Forensics...O My!

Learn how to extract DNA from strawberries, dust for fingerprints using cocoa powder and gain some general knowledge about forensic science. This workshop is for those in grades 5-8.

Strawberry DNA: In this activity, strawberries will be used because each strawberry cell has eight copies of the genome, giving them a lot of DNA per cell. First, to get all the DNA from the cells, we will use detergent is used to break open (lyse) the cells and break apart the nuclear membrane so that the DNA is released into solution.  Next, salt is used to clump the DNA together. Finally, alcohol is added to the solution which causes the DNA to precipitate out.  We will see the DNA as a fine, white stringy, goop.

Cocoa Fingerprints: In this activity, you will use playdough to first identify the main type of fingerprint. Then you will use a glass bead, cocoa powder and a make-up brush to mimic the process of dusting for fingerprints.

Everyone will be able to complete both activities during the hour long workshop.
