  • CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

    This certificate program requires the successful completion of 160 hours of study, corresponding to five core courses. Students can complete the certificate program within the Summer Term through our 8-week summer intensive certificate program, or can spread their studies over the Summer, Fall and/or Spring semesters (please see details below).

    REGISTRATION

    Deadline: Five business days before each class starts. 

    Note: To request that the XCSI-313 Furniture Design Foundation or XSI-313 Furniture Design Intensive pre-requisite course be waived by faculty, please submit a digital portfolio to prostudy@pratt.edu by 10 business days prior to the class start date of the certificate course(s) of interest to you.

    Early registration is encouraged. After the deadlines, students may still be admitted only if space remains in the selected course or program.

    TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS

    A laptop or desktop computer with a reliable internet connection and camera

    All students will be given access to the required digital tools through their Pratt Onekey account (e.g. GSuites, Slack, Adobe Suite, and Zoom). Pratt will use these online platforms to connect students with their faculty and it is the student’s responsibility to check that their region/computer is capable of supporting these various platforms and tools.

    Explore drawing as a means to create new ideas about furniture. Start by learning how to use perspective, line drawings, tonal studies; then practice line and tone in drawings; followed by using sources from life to bring new ideas to your furniture projects.


    February 1, 2021 to March 22, 2021, Online
    Learn to design and model your own piece of furniture through making and testing. Study human scale, proportion and composition. Gain a basic understanding of furniture formulation, construction and manufacturing. Working on a full-size model and prototype, experience all stages of the design process.     January 30, 2021 to April 17, 2021, Online
    Learn how to turn your initial idea into a real piece of furniture and go through all stages of the professional design process without leaving your home. Observe and experiment to find an inspiration. Create and develop your concepts. Use sketches, drawings and models to test and refine the proposal. Develop your furniture design skills, experiencing a variety of technologies. Learn how to effectively document and communicate your projects to your clients. Estimated supplies costs: $200.     Furniture design and manufacturing is a growing business. Learn how to thrive in that exciting world. Develop and adopt your professional skills to the specificity of the market. Learn how to specify, plan and price your designs. Work on project briefs, timelines and costing sheets. Gain a basic understanding of ergonomics. Pre-Requisites: XSI-313 Two- Week Summer Furniture Design Intensive or XCSI-313 Furniture Design Foundation; and XCSI-314 Furniture Design Drawing and Composition Courses.
