MLD - Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) Certification Course

Klose training logoThis engaging five and half day MLD Certification course is based on the techniques developed by Dr. Emil Vodder, Ph.D., MT. When skillfully applied, this therapeutic form of soft-tissue mobilization dramatically enhances lymph formation and promotes drainage within the superficial and deep systems of the lymph vascular network. MLD effectively reduces traumatic and post-surgical edema, and can provide symptomatic relief of migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), stress, fatigue, and more. MLD also induces general relaxation and detoxification.

During this course, students will be instructed in the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and basic MLD treatment sequences will be demonstrated and practiced. In addition, MLD treatment sequences for mild, medically-uncomplicated upper and lower extremity lymphedema will be taught. Each day will be divided into two sections: theoretical and hands-on application.

Course Educational Level: Introductory/Intermediate
Instructional Methods: Hands-on lab and lectures.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify basic elements of the anatomy of the lymphatic system and recognize the associated scientific terminology.
  • Differentiate between the normal and diseased states of the lymphatic system (physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system).
  • Identify indications and contraindications related to the use of MLD.
  • Competently perform the techniques of MLD for all body areas.
  • Devise appropriate MLD sequences for indications such as post-surgical edema, post-traumatic edema, fibromyalgia, general detoxification and other conditions.
  • Competently perform MLD sequences appropriate for clients who have undergone breast surgery for cancer (clients who are at risk of developing lymphedema).
  • Competently perform MLD sequences appropriate for clients with mild, medically-uncomplicated primary or secondary lymphedema.

    Prerequisite:
This course is designed for Licensed/Registered Massage Therapists who have 500 hours of massage education or are certified through the NCBTMB. PTs, PTAs, OTs, COTAs, ATCs, and RNs may also take this course but should first consult with Klose Training to ensure it is appropriate for their needs.

    Online Course Content:
As part of the curriculum for this course you will be given access to Klose Training's online MLD Preparation course no sooner than three (3) weeks prior to the start of class.  This is additional content and will be available for you to view prior to the classroom training.  It is not essential you complete it prior to the classroom training, but it will enhance your classroom learning so it is recommended.

    What to Bring:
1 or 2 sheet sets (1 if you can launder them during the week)
Bolster or pillow with pillowcase (to be changed 1 time)
Chest drape (blanket, towel or extra pillow case)

    You might consider bringing:
Robe/cover-up for trips to the bathroom
    Clipboard for easier note-taking
Bolster (if you prefer it over a pillow)
Blanket to accommodate temperature swings in the room.

What to Wear: comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (yoga clothes work well here) that will allow access to the body during the lab sessions. We prefer that you not wear jewelry as it can interfere with proper manual techniques. Also, please do not wear any scents or perfumes to class (no jewelry, no fragrances) and remember to keep your nails clean and short.
