Biography: Dr. Steven Berkowitz MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and professor in psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where he directs the Stress, Trauma, Adversity Research, and Treatment (START) Center. START's clinic provides treatment to children, families, and adults with the conviction that a lifespan and developmental frame is essential to effective treatment. He received his MD from Drexel University and did his psychiatry training at Yale Department of Psychiatry and the Yale Child Study Center, where he was on faculty from 1995-2009. Dr. Berkowitz has been at CUSOM for two and a half years. Previously, he was at the University of Pennsylvania SOM from 2009-2018. His career has focused on the prevention, intervention, and treatment of traumatized children, adults, and families. He has a particular focus on the impact of early life stress throughout the lifespan. Dr. Berkowitz's work has been featured in top national news outlets, and he is a go-to national expert for media for mental health issues at the forefront of the current pandemic.
