OCCHEALTH11 - Applying Cognitive Ergonomics to the Workplace

The overall goal of this course is to introduce cognitive ergonomics to the practicing Doctor of Chiropractic. While Doctor of Chiropractic are fully aware of traditional practice of musculoskeletal ergonomics, many may not be aware of the opportunities to work in cognitive ergonomics and/or collaborate with other disciplinary experts.

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Understand how cognitive ergonomics is different from general or traditional musculoskeletal ergonomics and is seen as a sub-specialty.
  • Understand the expanding knowledge related to human abilities and limitations and how they receive, process and respond to information.
  • Learn some of the key areas of research in cognitive ergonomics.
  • Understand the concepts, principles and methods used in cognitive ergonomics to solve work related problems and enhance worker well-being using case studies.
  • Identify and collaborate with cognitive ergonomic experts such as behavior psychologists, neuropsychologists, and/or occupational health psychologists.
  • Learn how the sub-specialty addresses work-related problems to apply concepts, principles and methods to evaluate and design better, safer work environments and systems.
  • Advise clients who need cognitive ergonomic services to reduce cognitive hazards, increase productivity, efficiency, quality and worker well-being.
