Course Detail: HE5000 - Training In Barrier Precaution And Infection Control Measures

Chapter 786 of the Laws of 1992 amended the Education Law and the Public Health Law, establishing a new requirement for many licensed professionals practicing in New York State. The professionals affected by this mandate include physicians, physician assistants, specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, and podiatrists. Individuals in these categories must complete approved courses work or training regarding infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work practice controls, to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice. Dentists, registered professional nurses, podiatrists, optometrists, licensed practical nurses, and dental hygienists must attest compliance to the State Education Department at the time of initial licensure and subsequent reregistration of licenses. Physicians, physician assistants, and specialist assistants must document completion of such course work to the Department of Health.
