engine, man welding, doctor and patient, train on tracks

Empower your safety practice by harnessing AI tools that sharpen your analysis, elevate your insights, and position you to lead confidently in a rapidly evolving safety landscape.
Led by Dr. Scott Shappell  & Dr. Douglas Wiegmann

Overview

Unlock the power of artificial intelligence to elevate your human factors and system safety work. This two-day, hands-on virtual course explores the evolution of AI and its rapidly growing role in safety management - focusing on practical applications of large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot.

Participants will learn how AI can support tasks ranging from accident and incident analysis of unstructured reports to day-to-day safety workflows. You'll gain access to HFACS/HFIX-based GPTs, learn how to build your own specialized models, and discover new ways to enhance insight, consistency, and efficiency in your safety practice.

Prior experience with the HFACS methodology and access to at least one GPT with unlimited queries is strongly recommended. This course should be taken after completion of the HFACS Course. The AI for Human Factors & System Safety Course can be completed independently, or as an elective toward the Certificate of Management in Human Factors Analysis and Classification System.

AI for Human Factors & System Safety: Practical Applications for Today's Safety Professional!

You will learn how to:

  • Apply AI-enabled techniques to analyze unstructured accident and incident data through the HFACS lens to drive deeper, faster, more consistent causal insights.
  • Operationalize large language models to streamline routine safety workflows in ways that increase throughput, strengthen analytical rigor, and reduce cognitive load.
  • Leverage HFACS/HFIX-based GPTs to enhance pattern recognition, elevate decision quality, and support more proactive system-safety interventions.
  • Design, build, and validate specialized AI models tailored to your organization's safety frameworks to boost accuracy, repeatability, and knowledge transfer across teams.
  • Integrate AI governance, prompt-engineering strategies, and human-in-the-loop safeguards to ensure responsible, ethical, high-trust deployment of AI within modern safety programs.

You will receive:

  • HFACS/HFIX-Based GPTs
  • ERAU Certificate of Completion

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Embry-Riddle will award 1.6 CEUs to each attendee who successfully completes the course, as well as an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Certificate of Completion.
