The course introduces health professionals in practice to the ethics of human subject, animal, and tissue research. Ethical theory and principles are introduced, followed by a brief history of research ethics. Topics covered in taped lectures and moderated discussions include foundations of ethical research and professional codes, application of ethical principles in human and animal research, roles and responsibilities in ethical research, and applying research ethics across settings in health care . Student evaluation will be based on participation in moderated discussion forums, research ethics case, applied ethical analysis, and a pre-post test to measure the objective learning outcomes.
