Training Information: CED-0911 - Maple Tree Tapping

This hands-on training introduces participants to the basics of maple tree tapping, with a focus on tree health and getting the most sap from each taphole. Participants will learn about tree physiology, tool selection, different types of spouts, and how to find the best taphole location. The course will cover tapping techniques and provide opportunities to practice tapping trees at the campus sugarbush.

Participants will receive a variety of spout samples from Middle Valley Maple to practice installing, and will be able to take home their spouts.

Led by Cory Krieg of the Vermont Maple Farmers Collective (maplefarmers.com), this hands-on training will help participants build the skills and confidence needed to tap their own trees and provide the essential knowledge for pursuing employment in maple sugaring operations.

Our goal is to encourage participants to use their own tools to practice this skill, enabling them to confidently apply it at home with their own equipment. Participants should bring their own drills and drill bits to the training, but we will have extra equipment if needed. Reach out to Taylor.Paone@VermontState.edu if you have any questions.

Participants should prepare to work outside and dress accordingly.
