Course Detail: DE057 - DEI and Data-Driven Decision Making

Your organization has committed to collecting and using data to guide their DEI policies and projects, but what does it take to actually do so?

In this six-hour workshop, participants will explore best practices for interpreting and using data to create more equity and inclusiveness in their organization. While many of these best practices are valid regardless of their application, this workshop will look at them through an equity lens and with an emphasis on their application within DEI efforts. Participants will discover the many benefits of this approach, such as when measuring DEI implementations and their success.

After this workshop, participants should be able to

Explain the difference between "data-driven" and "data-informed" DEI policies
Recognize and mitigate the impact of bias when interpreting and acting on data
Begin creating useful and impactful data-informed DEI policies
Check for "success" of efforts

Bethany Hamamoto
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Analyst

Biography:

Bethany Hamamoto is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Analyst at the University of Washington. She earned undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of Washington with a focus on public administration and policy implementation. Her work experience ranges from biotechnology to higher education in roles including Division Director and Human Resources Manager/Administrator.

Bethany utilizes more than ten years of human resources experience, policy knowledge, and proven analytical skills to conduct workforce data analysis. Bethany also brings her singular expertise to developing and delivering DEI-related courses and trainings for University of Washington Professional and Organizational Development and chairs the UWHR Community of Practice Diversity Committee representing over 400 Human Resources and DEI practitioners. Her courses and trainings focus on topics including intersectionality, inclusive language, turning data-informed policy into practice, workforce retention, legislative tracking, and conversations on race and diversity in the workplace.

She identifies gaps, anomalies and trends through writing and publishing the annual University of Washington Staff Demographic Baseline Report. Most recently, she has been a lead developer and facilitator for the UW BIPOC Staff Development Program pilot.
