Soviet Literature

Most Americans have little idea what happened behind the Iron Curtain. Russians and Ukrainians, however, are well aware that even in those dangerous times, great literature was born. Despite the threat of exile, imprisonment or execution, writers found the humor in communal living and the terrifying drama in civil war, genocide and purges.

From Chekhov and Gorky, from Ukrainian poets and Soviet filmmakers, from Jewish writers under Stalin and Russian writers of science fiction, brave men and women created art.
