Dissidents in Exile, the Notable "Proscrits" of 1852-1870

During the reign of Napoleon III in France and following the European revolutionary activity of 1848, hundreds of notable exiles, representing the tumultuous worlds of politics and the arts, fled to the English Channel islands of Jersey and Guernsey. These Proscrits' writing and their advocacy of causes while in exile is a fascinating tale. The Proscrits included dissidents from France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, the Balkans and even Brazil. Their group included poets, visual artists, actors, playwrights and at least one madman. These four sessions will compare and elaborate on their lives and actions during this critical time.
