Course Title: (HIS11326) HISTORY AND TOUR OF DATAW RUINS

Delve into Dataw Island's rich history, from the American Indian era through the days of Spanish exploration. Learn about the legend of King Dataw and the proprietary period leading to the antebellum plantation era of indigo and Sea Island cotton. Explore the preserved land that the National Register of Historic Places calls ''the most complete example of a 19th-century Sea Island cotton plantation in the country.''

NOTE: The instructor recommends grabbing lunch (on your own or with other OLLI members) at the Morgan River Grill at the Dataw Marina after the tour!

Course Notes:

Dataw Island, St. Helena Island, SC 29920 - guards will direct people to the right location. Directions coming from the USCB Beaufort Campus (801 Carteret St) Proceed south over the Woods Memorial Bridge and continue onto US215/Sea Island Parkway for about 6 minutes. Turn left onto Polowana Rd for 3 minutes. Take the 2nd left onto Dataw Drive. Go straight and stop at the gate; you will receive additional directions from there. Lunch following at the Morgan River Grill is recommended if you are interested. Great spot in Dataw on the water.

Joe Roney

Biography: JOE RONEY, RPh, has been a board member of the Dataw Historic Foundation since 2011, is a member and docent of the Historic Beaufort Foundation, and serves as a historic tour guide. He was president of the Lowcountry Civil War Round Table from 2012 to 2014.
