Course Notes:

Topic for Nov 19: The Philosophers of ChristianityThis session will discuss the ideas of the major philosophers of Christianity. It will focus primarily upon the profound and opposing influences that two of the greatest Christian philosophers exerted upon the Catholic Church. St Augustine's philosophy was heavily influenced by Plato, Plotinus, and the Church Fathers of the first four centuries. He advocated an ethics of acetic self-denial and withdrawal from concerns with this world in favor of the world to come. St. Thomas Aquinas, on the other hand, sought to reconcile Christianity with Aristotle. In so doing, he introduced an emphasis on happiness in this life and, by reconciling reason and theology, helped usher in the Renaissance.
