T&L 2900: ONL: How to Improve Executive Functioning in the Classroom

This course is designed to review the basic concepts of executive functioning and how it impacts learning. Participants will learn ways to embed executive functioning skills in classroom routines and lesson plans.  Participants will also learn basic executive functioning interventions to use with individual students and small groups. The book "Smart but Scattered" by Peg Dawson and Richard Guare will be used to teach and demonstrate concepts.

After completing this course participants will:

  1. Understand what executive functioning skills are and how they impact classroom success.
  2. Learn steps to embed executive functioning skills into classroom lessons and routines.
  3. Know basic executive functioning intervention strategies to assist struggling students.
The course content is organized into six lessons. Each lesson includes a reading assignment, a variety of links to articles, video/audio, and other instructional resources selected to enhance the learning experience and support the various topics. Discussion posts, reflection activities and a final paper will be used to assess your comprehension and application of those materials.
