| OL104 The History, Science and Art of Fountain Pens Time: 3-4:15 p.m. Dates: June 1, 8, 15, 22 Instructor: Dr. Russ Timkovich This course covers the development of the fountain pen - from the reed/quill of ancient days to the practical modern pen. The class will look at scientific principles (metallurgy, surface tension, capillary action and air pressure) that determine a successful pen and will examine the ingredients of ink from ancient to modern. What makes an ink bulletproof? What types of paper are most suitable for writing with a pen and why? After the last class, participants are encouraged to bring their favorite pen(s) to share with the class. |
