Music Appreciation: Movie Score Composers

Join retired GovState Professor and talented musician Ronald Small for his latest course creation for our Music Appreciation series. This course will explore the role and video samples of their music from a variety of their films. Composers covered include Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman, and Hans Zimmer, to more recent composers, Alan Menkin, Henry Mancini, Howard Shore, and John Williams. Special guest musician Sara Van Laningham, who worked in the scoring department of a Hollywood Studio, will join the class via Zoom for a Q&A for a wide array of questions and points for discussion.

The Golden Age of Media: A Brief History of Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, and Television

Join Myras Osman in his 15th year with The Knowledge Exchange for an exploration of the history of the newspaper industry, including yellow journalism and the industry's impact on American political life. The course will include coverage of the progressive muckraking reformers who changed journalism in both newspapers and magazines. The last two weeks of the course will examine the impact of radio and television from the 1920s to present day culminating with a trip down memory lane with a discussion of the classic TV shows of the 1950s and 60s that can still be viewed and enjoyed today.

The Civil War

Lincoln Roundtable members and longtime Knowledge Exchange class leaders Bill Mitchell & Scott Dominiak return in their 13^th year with The Knowledge Exchange.

This session will examine the differences between The Declaration of Independence and US Constitution Version 1.0 of the United States with Version 2.0 written by Abraham Lincoln.

The journey from 1.0 to 2.0 will be explored as it allowed Lincoln the latitude for editing the founding fathers' original intent amidst the Southern viewpoint of what they intended for version 2.0.  Also included will be a personal look at Lincoln and an examination of Robert E. Lee, whose dogged resistance to Lincoln's America caused untold misery for the country.

Inspired by the book Icons of Fashion: The 20th Century by Gerda Buxbaum, Christine Small in her 4^th year leading courses for The Knowledge Exchange, has created a fascinating look at the changes in fashion over the 100 years of the 20th Century. That century brought about the fastest fashion changes ever experienced which led to a boom in the clothing industry. Many of the fashion images shown in class will bring back memories of clothing from your past wardrobes!
