Course Detail: Free: Basic Life Support CPR and First Aid Training

Basic life support (BLS) training reinforces healthcare professionals' understanding of the importance of early CPR and defibrillation, performing CPR, choking relief, using an AED, and the role of each link in the Chain of Survival. The AHA's Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course trains participants to provide first aid, CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

This specific free course does not lead to CPR Certification.

Course Objectives:

High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
Important early use of an AED
Effective ventilations using a barrier device
Importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
First aid basics
Medical emergencies
Injury emergencies
Environmental emergencies
Preventing illness and injury
Adult CPR and AED use
Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies
Optional modules in Child CPR AED and Infant CPR

Community Emergency Training, Inc. connects with other nonprofit organizations and offers free CPR/First Aid and other classes for low-income minority groups who otherwise cannot afford to pay for such classes. These programs are essential in saving lives, especially for the disproportionately high number of minorities living with heart disease and other conditions where family members need to know basic care techniques.

Biography: Felicia Washington began her career in the healthcare field in 2005 as a Phlebotomist and became a Lab Manager. In 2010 she transitioned into a Human Resources and Business Manager position at a Home Health Agency. Her passion for education and helping others led her to become a Certified CPR and First Aid Instructor. Felicia quickly realized the need for more accessible emergency response training in her community, so in 2015 she started her own business, Emergency Training, LLC. In 2018, she was recognized as the Most Engaged Small Business by the Statesboro Bulloch Chamber of Commerce. In 2020 she served as the Vice Chair of the Statesboro Bulloch Chamber of Commerce Health Industry Committee. In 2021 she became a Board Member of the Statesboro Bulloch Chamber of Commerce and served as the Chair of the Chamber's Health Industry Committee. In 2021 she also became a Board Member of the Statesboro Family YMCA and serves as the Vice Chair of that Board today. She is passionate about the A Place to Dream Program she helped start at the Statesboro YMCA Branch in 2021. Due to the disparity of help in underserved and BIPOC communities in 2022, Felicia Washington founded Community Emergency Training, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase bystander CPR and First Aid response in underserved and BIPOC communities. Community Emergency Training, Inc. connects with other nonprofit organizations and offers free CPR/First Aid and other classes for low-income minority groups who otherwise cannot afford to pay for such classes.
