Overview

English for Flight Training is a course designed to improve the aviation English language of ab initio student pilots who speak English as a second language. The course focuses on aviation topics relevant to flight training and skills related to communication on the radio, interactions with a flight instructor, and comprehension of flight training information. Students will learn to use and understand basic aviation-related vocabulary and content, and they will develop communication strategies required in flight training. Students will also practice the speaking and listening skills necessary to communicate with ATC during routine VFR flight operations and improve their ability to communicate with fluency, clarity and accuracy. By the end of the course, students will be more prepared to participate in flight training conducted in English.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Explain and discuss basic aviation-related terms and content as it pertains to flight training with accuracy, fluency, and clarity.
  • Employ communicative strategies to exchange messages and recognize and resolve misunderstandings in flight training scenarios.
  • Use standardized phraseology in routine Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flight operations through role-play simulations.
  • Comprehend and take notes about spoken and written information related to flight training topics.
  • Obtain the information from and describe the importance of Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) broadcasts.
  • Speak intelligibly to flight instructors and administrative staff during flight training instructional activities.

Course Information

This is a virtual, instructor-led course that includes both scheduled synchronous class sessions and asynchronous homework activities. Students will spend 4.5 hours in class sessions and 4.5 hours on homework activities each week. Class sessions will be held through a video conferencing platform and homework activities will be completed on a learning management software platform. This course requires a personal computer and a reliable internet connection. A digital certificate is available upon completion of the course.
