Course Detail: AVE-5301 - Aviation English Rater Training
Overview
The Aviation English Rater Training course provides the knowledge and practical experience necessary to apply the ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale with accuracy and consistency. Participants gain an overview of ICAO's Language Proficiency Requirements (LPRs) and explore key concepts in aviation language assessment.
Through practical, hands-on activities, participants apply the ICAO Rating Scale across the six skill areas: Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Interaction, and Comprehension, providing both ratings and supporting evidence.
The three-week course combines asynchronous online study with live, instructor-led sessions focused on discussion and calibration. It concludes with a final assessment in which participants independently rate speech samples and justify their decisions using clear, evidence-based reasoning.
Course Objectives
Upon successful course completion, students will be able to:
- Explain and analyze the essential elements of English language proficiency testing that support the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements.
- Accurately and consistently apply the ICAO Rating Scale to selected speech samples.
- Provide clear, evidence-based justification for assigned ratings in alignment with ICAO standards.
Course Information
This is a virtual, instructor-led course that includes both scheduled Live Sessions on Zoom and asynchronous homework activities in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Students will spend a total of 30 hours on the course over 3 weeks. A digital certificate is available upon completion of the course.
The price of Aviation English Rater Training is $3,500.
Course Requirements

Course Pre-Requisites
- An ICAO English proficiency rating of 5 or higher
- Experience as one of the following:
- English language expert
- Experience as an applied linguist OR as an English language teacher
- Operational expert
- Professional experience as a pilot or controller
- English language expert
