As the aviation industry continues to evolve toward a proactive, data-driven approach to safety, Safety Management Systems (SMS) have become the cornerstone of effective safety oversight. With the FAA expanding SMS requirements under 14 CFR Part 5 and promoting voluntary SMS adoption across the aviation industry, organizations of all sizes must understand how to develop, implement, and continuously improve their safety management practices.

This intensive three-day course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of FAA Safety Management System requirements, guidance, and industry best practices. Whether your organization is implementing an SMS for the first time, participating in the FAA's Voluntary SMS Program, or enhancing an existing system, this course delivers the knowledge and practical tools needed to build an effective safety program.

Through interactive discussions, case studies,  and real-world aviation examples, participants will learn how to apply SMS principles to identify hazards, manage operational risk, strengthen safety culture, and improve organizational performance while meeting FAA expectations.

Course Objectives

Upon completion ofthis course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and evolution of Safety Management Systems within the aviation industry.
  • Interpret FAA SMS regulations, guidance, and the requirements of 14 CFR Part 5 and identify strategies for successful implementation.
  • Develop and strengthen the four components of an effective Safety Management System.
  • Conduct Safety Risk Management (SRM) processes, including hazard analysis and risk assessment.
  • Establish Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and monitor organizational safety performance through Safety Assurance activities.
  • Promote a positive reporting culture through effective Safety Promotion and Just Culture principles.
  • Evaluate SMS effectiveness using data-driven performance measures and continuous improvement processes.
  • Integrate SMS into daily operations to support regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and organizational resilience.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Embry-Riddle will award 2.1 CEUs to each attendee who successfully completes the course. Each attendee will receive a Certificate of Completion for completing the course.

Cancellation Policy

A cancellation charge of $150 will be assessed on any standard cancellations. A late cancellation charge of 25% of the course registration fee will be assessed on cancellations occurring within 14 days of the start of the course.
