Course Detail: NCNTSPLIT - NC New Teacher Support Program Literacy Summit

Literacy Summit Description

Strong literacy skills are critical for learning, yet too many students across the nation experience difficulty learning to read.  In North Carolina, for instance, only 39% of fourth graders and 33% of eighth graders are considered proficient readers on the National Assessment of Education Progress; more than a quarter of these students (26% and 31% respectively) read below the basic level of achievement (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2018).

In an effort to address this pervasive need, the ECU College of Education and the North Carolina New Teacher Support Program (NC NTSP) will host a K-12 Literacy Summit on February 18, 2019, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Greenville Hilton located at 207 SW Greenville Blvd., Greenville, NC 27834. A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 8:00 AM.

What is a Literacy Summit?

Participants who attend this event will have an opportunity to learn and share innovative practices utilized to prepare pre-service educators and support novice educators during the first three years of service as they strive to become accomplished literacy teachers. Additionally, during interactive breakout sessions and an expert panel discussion, participants will engage in conversations focused on developing and strengthening community partnerships and resources that support literacy development.

Who should attend?

This event is designed for two groups of educators. The first, a team of three including a district/charter district curriculum leader, school-based leader, and a lead teacher. The second group should be comprised of teacher educators from private and public universities in North Carolina.
