Hand and Power Tool Safety Awareness

Using power tools can be one of the most dangerous things we do daily. The Hand and Power Tool Safety Awareness Course is designed for anyone who works with or around power tools. Supervisors and Safety Managers who are responsible for the safe use of tools will find this course very beneficial. The class will cover how to safely use a variety of tools such as Circular Saws, Grinders and Abrasive-Wheel Tools, Table saws, Powder actuated tools, Fuel-powered tools, Nail guns/Pneumatic tools, Chop saws, and Drills/ hammer drills. The course will cover the OSHA standards regulating hand and power tools along with safety tips and best practices. At the conclusion of the course, students will be aware of the hazards and control methods associated with the use of tools.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Identify the different types of tools along their correct uses
  • Recognize the hazards and controls unique to each type of tool
  • Describe applicable OSHA standards regulating the use of tools
  • Identify the proper type of switch and guard required on different power tools
  • Recognize the proper PPE for the use of power tools
  • Identity tools that produce crystalline silica and describe the requirements for dust control
  • Describe the importance of following manufacturers' instructions
  • Recognize the importance of proper ergonomics while using hand and power tools

To attend an OSHA-numbered course offered virtually (VILT) through USF OTIEC, participants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be an existing student who has previously completed a USF OTIEC course, or
  • Provide a registration address located in one of the following states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina
