Course Title: (FILM201) FILM APPRECIATION AND ANALYSIS: CULT FILMS

Of the tens of thousands of films made throughout history, very few have elicited a fiery passion in moviegoers that exists long after their initial releases. Cult films have a dedicated and loyal following, and they are often defined by their lack of mainstream appeal and a willingness to break cinematic norms. We will view and analyze three such films. Through our exploration, we will seek to find why these movies inspire such dedication and continue to be viewed and discussed to this day.

Course Notes:

Session 1 on Friday, 2/6/2026: "HAROLD AND MAUDE". Released in 1971. Directed by Hal Ashby. Cast: Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort, Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack, Charles Tyner. "Harold and Maude" is a romantic comedy that combines dark humor with absurdism, which challenges viewers to think beyond the obvious. The film is ultimately seen as a celebration of life and non-conformity. Critically and commercially unsuccessful upon its release, "Harold and Maude" became a runaway cult classic, playing uninterrupted for three years in some cities. The movie has loyal fans to this day. In 2006, the Writers Guild of America ranked the screenplay on its list of "101 Greatest Screenplays" ever written.
