The fall of the Western Roman Empire forced European Christians back to square one in building construction technology. To this fact was added the extra challenge of designing a building to accommodate the new Christian worship practices and iconography taken directly from the Bible. These dual challenges resulted in what we now call the Gothic cathedral. This program will focus on the evolution of this building typology in the geographic region of France known as the Ile-de-France, culminating with the current reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral.
