Course Notes:

Jan 27 Topic: Is Cryptocurrency Money? To paraphrase one of Plato's students, "where is the 'moneyness' in crypto?" The first cryptocurrency transaction occurred in 2009. It consisted of a sale of 5,050 Bitcoins for $5.02; Today those coins are worth over $290 million. Is this really money? This session will begin with an explanation of how cryptocurrencies work along with a brief description of the blockchain technology upon which cryptocurrencies rest. We will review the development and functions of money along with the advantages offered by crypto. We will also discuss the risks posed by crypto along with an arguement for why crypto may not be money. Although it's not obvious, this issue goes to the central question in philosophy: what is the metaphysical status of concepts?
