Course Title: (FILM201) FILM APPRECIATION AND ANALYSIS: CULT FILMS

Of the tens of thousands of films made throughout history, very few have elicited a fiery passion in moviegoers that exists long after their initial releases. Cult films have a dedicated and loyal following, and they are often defined by their lack of mainstream appeal and a willingness to break cinematic norms. We will view and analyze three such films. Through our exploration, we will seek to find why these movies inspire such dedication and continue to be viewed and discussed to this day.

Session 3 (Final) on April 3rd - Pee Wee's Big AdventureReleased in 1985Directed by Tim BurtonCast: Paul Reubens, Elizabeth Daily, Mark Holton, Diane Salinger, Judd Omen, Tony BillInitially dismissed as an oddity not worthy of attention, Pee Wee's Big Adventure is now a landmark cult film. Surreal visuals and an eccentric musical score combine with a masterful performance from Paul Reubens to create a truly unique absurdist comedy. Among the themes explored in the movie are being in touch with one's inner self, the importance of limitless imagination, and the power of love and friendships. Pee Wee's Big Adventure was crafted by artists who refused to be constrained by filmmaking norms. The result is a much beloved movie that is viewed and discussed to this day.
